Quran - The Holy book of Islam
According to followers of Islam, the Holy book Quran contains message from Allah (God) to humanity. God first revealed it to the angel Gabriel who in turn passed it to Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) – the chosen one.
Going by Islamic accounts, this message (which later evolved as Quran) was passed on to the Prophet in several phases and in a period spanning over 20 years. The Prophet is believed to have attained an age of 40 years when Gabriel first communicated with him and the entire revelation (the Quran) was completed when Prophet had become 63 years old. The language of the original message (Quran) was Arabic, but it has been translated into many other languages.
The Quran is one of the two key pillars on which foundation of Islam religion was laid. The second leg is the Sunnah of the Prophet. However, Quran is different from Sunnah in the sense that it is believed to contain the words of Allah himself while Sunnah pronounces words spoken by Prophet Muhammad. Thus Quran has not been expressed using any human's words.
According to Islamic belief, Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) was the last messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Quran is the last message sent by God for humanity. That explains the significance which is attached with Quran in the comity of religious edicts.
Quran is divided into thirty equal divisions, which are called juz in Arabic. There are 114 chapters, of varying length. The longest chapter is Al-Baqarah consisting of 286 verses and the shortest chapter is AlKawthar consisting of three verses only. In total, the Quran has 6,236 verses.
